I followed 517,137 regular Fitbod lifters across 19.4 million active weeks from 2022 through 2025. Each time someone trained, I asked whether that week became the start of a 90-day break.

August was the most dangerous month. December was the safest.

In August, 1.89% of active-lifter weeks began a long break. In December, 1.48% did. That makes an established workout habit 27% more likely to break in August — about 1 in 53 active weeks, compared with 1 in 67 in December.

December looks like the obvious quitting season. Travel, family, closed gyms, and holidays all disrupt training.

The data shows that disruption. December was the month most likely to produce a 15-to-30-day gap between workouts: 6.17% of active weeks, compared with 4.56% in August. Short pauses were 35% more common in December.

But December was still the month least likely to start a 90-day absence.

Why a Two-Week Gap in December Isn’t the Same as a Break in August

Two countries cannot prove what causes the drop. But the reversal points toward summer disruption, not one universal post-New-Year collapse. This mirrors findings from a large Australian study of over 223,000 parkrun participants, which found that dropout follows a recurring seasonal rhythm rather than a single calendar-driven event. “Quit” is shorthand. We can see 90 days without a Fitbod workout; we cannot see a permanent decision.

Most habit advice focuses on January: start small, set goals, build consistency. By summer, the habit is supposed to take care of itself. The data says that is when it needs protection.

Do not try to defend a perfect summer streak. Plan the restart before the interruption begins.
